Another prominent television personality has come forward with allegations of sexual harassment by her superior. This time, the victim is Karla Amezola, a news anchor for Estrella TV; the defendants are Lieberman Broadcasting, Inc., the owner of Estrella, and Andrés Angulo. The lawsuit was filed in June 2016 in Los Angeles Superior Court, but the case is just now drawing significant attention after another anchor from Estrella, Adriana Ruggiero, brought a lawsuit in which she alleged similar acts of sexual harassment.
Ms. Amezola's attorneys claim to have audio tapes in which Mr. Angulo is allegedly heard making sexually harassing comments about her. The attorneys have not released the tapes, but the instances of harassment alleged in the complaint are compelling. The complaint describes a history of lewd comments and sexual advances that includes many "shameless and disgusting acts" by Mr. Angulo. Among the acts described in the complaint is an occasion on which Mr. Angulo showed Ms. Amezola photographs of co-workers that he claimed to have slept with and numerous statements that he thought of her while masturbating in his office.
The complaint further alleges that when Ms. Amezola lodged a complaint about Mr. Angulo's behavior with Estrella's human resources department, the station and Mr. Angulo began to retaliate against her. Ms. Amezola acknowledged that her decision to bring the lawsuit may limit her future employment opportunities but she felt compelled to come forward to protect other female employees from similar acts of harassment.
Sexual harassment is far too common in the workplace. State and federal laws protect employees who are or have been the victims of sexual harassment. People who find themselves the victims of such acts may wish to consult a lawyer who specializes in sexual harassment cases. Such a consultation can provide a helpful analysis of the law and facts that govern the case and an estimate of the likelihood of recovering damages for lost income, mental anguish and attorneys' fees.
